SETTO and Lanzarote Rugby

Rugby-foto-1“Eh? Rugby in Lanzarote?!” is something we have heard a lot over the last few years, but as more & more visitors are discovering our existence and word is spreading, our sunshine island is slowly but surely forging links in the international rugby family.

It all started out in 2005 with a handful of guys using the excuse of throwing a rugby ball around on Playa Pocillos beach as a prerequisite for a few beers on a Saturday afternoon. After a few weeks of this intensive training, the Canary Island Beach Tournament in Las Palmas beckoned us, and following a most enjoyable weekend, we pledged to form a ‘XV’ team and enter the official Canary Island league, which was actually formed in 1993. Our first outing as a team saw us travel to La Laguna in Tenerife for a XV tournament, and stepping out in old shirts borrowed from Uni Las Palmas we took to the pitch with nothing to lose. And indeed, we lost nothing, well apart from a few memory cells following the victory celebrations!

Over the last couple of seasons, rugby has developed further, with a very successful U-19 squad taking to the pitch and beating neighbours Fuerteventura a couple of times. Several of the youth players went on to represent the Canary Island U-19 team, and have cemented their position in the current senior team. Disappointingly though, the youth squad diminished in size as quite a few players left the island for further education, but recent weeks have attracted a few more young players in the 15-18 age bracket, so we are aiming to re-establish the youth team.

Enthusiasm & energy is something that is definitely not lacking in the newest team – the U14s. These last few months have brought together a great bunch of lads, ranging from 8 to 14 years, and already we have enough to form a team. Such is the interest that we already have sponsors from local businesses on board, enabling us to buy equipment & we have just ordered a full kit for the boys, sorry, the ‘Volcanitos’ as they prefer to be referred to! Several fixture in 2011 are in the pipeline, so watch this space as the future of rugby in Lanzarote gets ready to take to the field.

Next May will see Lanzarote’s 2nd International Rugby Festival, which follows on from this year’s very successful Beach & XV Tournament. Already several teams from the UK & Ireland have confirmed their attendance, so keep the weekend around the 7th May 2011 free !

If you are interested in taking part in the 2nd International Rugby Festival or touring at any time, Lanzarote offers excellant weather all year round and SETTO offers an excellant service, catering for all you needs while enjoying your teams tour. SETTO services include airport transfers, cheap accomodation, transport to and from the matches as well as a wide range of social activities such as catamaran trips, western nights out or just a beer and a quiz if that’s what you fancy. We are therefore very confident that we can organise a tailor-made rugby tour designed specifically for your team(s) requirements, when coming over to the sunny island of Lanzarote, just 60 miles off the coast of Africa.
